Counter-Life 2

Played with the "Early Access" version.

Counter-Life 2 adds Counter-Strike: Source weapons and functions to Half-Life 2.
Needs some polish to be really enjoyable but the Early Access version is fun.

Spatial Anomaly

Very well written, voiced and translated.

In terms of balancing it's a bit random with it being mostly easy but with hard parts. (Hint: Strafe left-right in that fight)

A bit dissapointed with you not really needing new suits since you barely get to use them.

The two later zones feel a bit empty on the A-life side with not much going on, plus some unused space.

Scripting-wise the infinite stalker spawners don't feel very reassuring.

But overall I'd recommend it just for the story alone and the spatial anomaly itself. Actual score: 8.5

Grounded Commonwealth

It's overall phenomenal. Only reason it's not a ten is because some of the voices were too obviously AI (but I also noticed other voices being AI that were good, maybe the author used a different model later?) and they took me out of it a bit.

Writing's good, seems to contain nothing offensive and if anything displays the plight of women in the setting much better than any girlboss writing. The characters voiced by actual actors are good, I thought Preston sounded annoying at first but he really isn't, absolutely fits the young, naive and idealistic archetype it's going for. He really grew on me even though he was a follower I literally never used in the base game.

You can think whatever you want about the author, but if he has any hateful beliefs about black people or women he did not infuse any of it into this (especially not against women).

I had my doubts before playing it thinking it was just an edgy face swap but I can't say I'd play without it now.

Decent mapping and intuitive puzzles. Compelling landscapes.

Nail gun was a nice touch and had me wondering when the real weapons would be introduced... BAM. Automatic nailgun. I see. I see how this game is going to go. Can't wait for the rocket propelled nailbomb.

Kind of annoying pipe fatigue mechanic, but realistic I suppose.

Totally rad tunes. Strays a bit from that classic Half-Life formula, but builds with a retro techno twist. Pumps you up.

I love the way weapons are introduced. Just when I thought this was going to be some fever dream weapon scheme, ol' reliable comes into play. Intense, close-quartered firefight ensues, perfectly training the player on how this thing is most effective.

I loved the library. Varied and intriguing environments with a splash of nostalgia.

There's a super annoying bug where the door aggressively tries to close when you're caught in a doorway and makes this awful sound. Certainly discourages use of doorways as cover.

Train section was innovative, but not really built for GldSrc. Too janky and frustrating. Can't count the number of times I randomly gibbed while minding my own business.

Health was far too scarce to be truly fun. Hitscan enemies with high accuracy made the soldiers too hard to fight without save scumming. I play all mods on Normal to gauge difficulty. This one is definitely harder than average, but also not the hardest.

I appreciate the effort put into the crossbow thingy and it feels like it should be a powerful weapon, but the player is rarely rewarded for camping. You take too much damage and can't heal fast enough for sniping to be a viable option. Run and gun before the soldiers even realize you're there is often the best option, but it's hard to implement reliably. One miss with the shotty or slug thing and 30 health is gone.

It's too hard to play the game organically. Feels like every encounter kills you and requires skilled execution with that prescience you have from already dying several times. What I love about Half-Life games is they let you screw up. Valve makes you feel like a badass, but also challenges you such that you learn from your mistakes. You figure out what does and doesn't work, and death is only used when you're stubborn. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Except everything kills you in Poke646.

Shotgun tried to be fun but, like HL1, it lacks the punch that makes it not only satisfying, but formidable. Lack of a true double barrel limits your I NEED TO GET THE **** OUT OF HERE NOW options and the jarring recoil make such a much-needed weapon so hard to use.

Great use of lighting and even music to guide the player forward. If you're ever stuck, just be in the moment and listen to the game.

Ending was lame. Tedious Xen platforming followed by even more tedious platforming in the form of a boss battle. Felt unfinished. Game got weird with the platforming toward the end.

Plot was kinda whatever, but the setting was great. Love this alternate imagining of post-HL events. Makes you realize how off-the-wall and unpredictable Valve was with the Combine approach.

It's overall a great mod, but far from the greatest. A unique and mostly fun experience, but in general too hard to relax to.

Broken Crescent

A sadly underrepresented geographical region and time period given some much needed love, although it still suffers from issues found amongst many Total War mods, namely some instances of clumsy art direction, although it is for the most part decently executed and unintrusive, particularly when it comes to the units. The battles are fun, too!

It's one of those mods that could easily be mistaken for an expansion pack, as long as you ignore Tsuyoshi Nagano's artwork splashed all over this mod.

Half-Life 2 2003 Storyline Port

Really nice to finally have a stable and playable port of this stuff. The only bugs I noticed were in the street war sections of the game, where Alyx kept running head first into a disintegration field. Also that cut Kleiner death made me lol

A very good Steampunk Megawad !
My only criticism is the number of enemies, sometimes there are too many in small areas, personally I don’t find this fun.
However, this Megawad is worth a look especially for its level design !

Half-Life: Sum

The first thing I have in mind when finishing the game is the level design. I'm goldsrc mapper too and for me it's just amazing and well detailed ! Amazing work done by the author that provide me a good inspiration for my own creation ! Thanks for this !

But there are some points I didn't like, the level design is amazing but finally a bit repetitive with the same textures. The lightning is too flat with the same tones, and it's the small point that for me which could be more worked. And last thing about lightning, in general it's too dark.

Now about the gameplay, I recognized the author gameplay style because I played Half-life Urbicide lately too and it's the same thing. In Urbicide it's a bit better but in Half-life Sum it's too repetitive, walking, taking weapons, monsters appearing or on your way, killing them, continue and repeat again and again. It's a shame having a so wonderful level design but not well-used to serve the gameplay and the areas created. So sometimes I was a bit boring.

The final part is interesting, and I didn't expect it but repeating it 3 times with the same camera in the bed, well... a bit boring too when you are repeating the same thing for the third time.

But still be a very good MOD so far.
