Surreal Maps

Mod review by skdursh Agree (1) Disagree (1)

Oblige maps... why do people release oblige maps? You made NOTHING. You generated something that literally anyone else can do. Waste of everyone's time.

Get a Life

Mod review may contain spoilers by omen1592080030 Agree Disagree

This game nails the fever dream experience.
Thrown into random **** with random **** happening without explanation, weird texture choices, uncanny characters, eye-stabbing HUD and UI.

On a more serious note:
And it's not just inexperience on the devs, the tutorial for the stupidly overcomplicated health system is botched. First section we're freezing and a voice tells us to heal ourselves. Second we get a lobotomy of sorts and we're only told to go find a medkit. Third we get ******* shot for no reason, draining almost all our chest health and making our bleed. Explanation for those random symbols in your equipment? Nah, go figure. Also it takes 3(three) medkits to heal out a limb to max, with your total capacity of 9.

The game fails to get my attention, and instead of doing something original, we have the generic blackouts and appearing in some absolutely random place.

Oh have I mentioned button bindings? Go figure. That's right, the game isn't even nice enough to tell us what is the equipment key. Naturally I pressed "I", but for some reason it's under "H". I found out after snooping in the options.

The HUD is weird, badly designed even. The consumable icons feel like they're badly cropped, and the health "bar" is obnoxiously big. The equipment UI isn't any better either. You first get to see it in a colorblind section. And you get blasted with 4 icons. One is a liquid drop inside an explosion, another is a thunder-struck eye, a shooting target (???) and crossed feet. The game doesn't explain anything. Is it for bleeding? Getting my legs cut off? Well go figure, not explained.

That's the review. Oh I only touched the first 20-30 minutes of the game? That's ******* right, I absolutely refuse to play this. After the first combat section I gave up. Gunplay is ****, enemies shoot through walls. Also don't get mislead by the slow-mo button in the options. It's limited. And not like in F.E.A.R. No no no, it's a consumable item. And so I died while trying to use it, as my character picked up a random grenade in the middle of a firefight which triggered a stupidly long animation.

And the models do no justice. It seems fine at first, as it utilizes valve game assets, but once it gets to the custom ones, it dramatically drops in quality (i'd compare this to Crack-Life texture-wise).

But skipping action and mechanics, did this game get my attention via lore or story?

...is there a story to this?

Just don't bother, It's an old mod with wasted potential, and there are better, similiar ones made (Underhell, for example).

Mod page being used for political propaganda. I've seen enough here.

Do not support the schizos that bring politics into gaming.

Ever see something so unabashedly racist and sexist and somehow it's popular? Yea.

Extremely unstable, riddled with repeatable, script based crashes that make progression impossible.

Good concept, but you can't experience it even a little, due to these bugs.

Grounded Commonwealth

Mod review may contain spoilers by OhNoesBunnies! Agree (2) Disagree (17)

While I appreciate the attempt at making something "Authentic" to what the Enclave had America being in a pre-war society gone apocalypse-now Raider-destroyed hellscape.

Except it doesn't click with the original lore of Fallout (and I'm not saying Fallout 4 did, either), and it's a clear effort into turning what's supposed to be a 50's themed idealist society corrupted by an internal power struggled and nuked by two superpowers.

While I appreciate the removal of /certain/ tropes, the changing of race, the references in comments and forums by the developer in terms of "White people have culture" (Yes, but /white/ is not a culture, there's actual scientific studies dedicated to that fact), and subtle, potentially racist hints elsewhere, makes this kind of bleh.

A majority of black and other ethnic groups live in the North-East of the United States, especially in areas around the commonwealth.

Now suddenly everyone is white.

Strong characters have been changed based solely on gender, with few exceptions to the ugly "STRONG GIRL" trope.

The dev has clearly made an effort to remove "Woke" things, and woke is a word only used by racists and the GOP, and clearly this Developer and his fans to remove ethnic diversity from a 1950's themed apocalyptic game that takes place in the 2100s and beyond.

Unlike the original Fallout 1 and 2, both of which included diverse ethnic casting including with the MANY tribes and more, he's clearly missed the point.

A blatantly racist mod masquerading as "realistic" by cherry-picking statistics and arguments that would not be too out of place in Parler.

It would come as no surprise that this mod was only re-uploaded here after the mod was removed from NexusMods (a site which has a very wide level of tolerance for content) and the author banned from there. It says more about the mod and its content more than anything: Forums.nexusmods.com

Half-Life: Enlightened

Mod review by Nitestokeh Agree Disagree

It's one bad design decision after another:
- Holstering was added back for no reason. This wouldn't be a problem if the original animations weren't so slow and pace-breaking and if you could fire while holding LMB after drawing a new weapon
- Entity pickups have collision now, ensuring you'll always be floating in the air for 1 second after picking them up and messing with your aim. Because of that they also may disappear completely or spawn in the wrong place, which happens in training room for instance
- Python dealing more damage means the skill required to use it is gone. The original balance required you to score headshots to master it, now you just kill every grunt effortlessly
- Thanks for giving me a pistol before getting a crowbar, now I have absolutely no reason to pick it and can stay helpless if my ammo runs out
- What's up with Otis randomly replacing Barney? Moreover, why does he still drop a 9mm pistol if he's holding a Deagle?
- Not only sprinting is rudimentary, it drains randomly if you exceed your normal jogging velocity in unintended ways, it won't randomly let you jump
- Forcing HD models on whether you like it or not. Really? Worse is that it's replaced randomly, meaning you'll still have Glock as a worldmodel
- Backporting HL2 sounds to HL1 while decreasing the sample rate. What's the point if it sounds worse and doesn't fit the original design?

As for the main course, which is supposed to be the new lighting, it does a terrible job of ruining the mood of iconic maps and making them either overbright or bland

This would make a great remaster by Bethesda

Low effort "mod". Doesn't even satisfy to the standards of a "power fantasy" mod as it's just a lazy "press button to win" mod for people incapable of handling the ideas of failure or exerting effort.

MISERY

Mod review by bacone Agree Disagree

Misery is one of the most famous mods for the Stalker franchise, as well as being the most influential, realizing that up to date mods like Gamma, EFP and Anomaly all take features originally developed in Misery.

The greatest issue with Misery is its unoptimization, artifical difficulty, terrible game balance, item bloat and awful artifact hunting.

Misery truly is, a miserable experience. The problem is that this extreme difficulty makes little sense and often soft locks or slows progression down to hours of savescumming to push past awfully balanced areas.

Misery, with all of its cool new overhaul, suffers greatly with artificial BS difficulty, at the players expense.

Certainly an influential mod, but not the greatest or best by any means.

I could've been rude and stated that this mod is a sad joke and that there are countless others with more passion and wau better development but instead I'll leave on this generous 6 rating; the mod is unbalanced, unoptimized, looks like ****, runs like ****, feels like **** and is only worth experiencing til you realize how awful it truly is.
